This is one of the best family movies I have ever seen! It was 20 years ago, in the “old” country, and I am not Russian – so there is no patriotism here.
The story is fantasic, the cast is at their best, and the Russian cinematogrpahy in adapting fairy tales has a long and excellent tradition.
This is a movie about values in life, about searching for happiness and the meaning of life, and I am extatic it is now available on DVD.

This is one of the memorable movies in my life. I watched it as a kid and loved it.
So thrilled that it’s on DVD now. I want my child to see it now and hopefully enjoy as much as I did when I was a kid.

wow, we’ve got some pretty heavy critics here! my guess is that anyone who doesnt like the kentuckian is either a sissy or reviews way to many movies and needs to get some sunshine. as a boy i was fasinated by this movie. it was easy to be romanced by this film because of the boy and his dog and how he prefered hannah over the school marm, and is ultimatly right about her in the in the end. the movie knows exactly where its going(if you are paying attention)and has a beautiful way of showing you what things must have been like back then,i.e. the singing black entertainers prompting lancaster of “texas”"texas” texas”!, when the boat comes to town. this is a wonderful movie for children that havent yet been polluted by the endless amount of crap that unfortunatly is in abundance nowadays. this film still has enough drama and human interest with an actual, real substance for any age. its a mere record of what life was like in one part of the world at one time and its done quite well if you let the movie take you instead of find whats wrong with it.

One of only two films directed by Lancaster, “The Kentuckian” is neither a rousing success nor a glaring disaster. The direction is not all that stylish, but it is no embarrassment. Bernard Herrmann adds to the picture with his musical score.

The story is about Kentucky frontiersman Big Eli, and his son Little Eli, fleeing an infamous family feud and looking for a new life in Texas. They stop along the way to free a bondswoman from her contract, which costs them all of their “Texas money”, the funds set aside for passage to Texas.

Big Eli goes to work for his brother (John McIntire), in the tobacco business, and life among townspeople changes his plans, much to his son’s dismay.

There is romance, and some pretty fair action with Lancaster in a whip fight. The best moment is Lancaster rushing to reach a shooter as he reloads his flintlock rifle in real-time.

Walter Matthau has a good turn as a menacing town boss, and John Carradine does a marvelous portrayal of a medicine man/snake oil salesman. Una Merkel plays Eli’s sister-in-law.

Dianne Foster is ravishing as the freed bondswoman Hannah. She guest-starred in a ton of TV classics in the 50’s and 60’s, including “Wagon Train”, “Perry Mason”, “The Fugitive”, “Honey West”, “Petticoat Junction”, and “Route 66″.

At times, the picture does not seem to know where it’s going. At other times, the picture is very cohesive. The DVD transfer isn’t bad, either. Well worth a viewing, “The Kentuckian” is a real treat for Lancaster fans.

Cary Grant is cast as the commander of the Sea Tiger, a sub held together by a lick and a promise. Tony Curtis is cast as Lt Nick Holden. He was assigned sea duty as a punishment, and is very outside of his element. Since the country is at war, supplies are very scarce, and Holden discovers that he does have a talent in being a thief. If they can’t get a requisition filled, Mr. Holden can find it. This crew has one catastrophe after another, and then they get stuck with team of nurses that are stranded. This is a hilarious movie that will make you laugh out loud. The cast is superb, and not just the talent of Grant and Curtis, but all the supporting players.

Tony Curtis and Cary Grant are perfect in this movie.

Cary Grant is the Commander of the Sea Tiger, a submarine with more problems than crew members.

His troubles begin when the sub sinks before even leaving the harbor during a Japanese raid. Commander Sherman (Grant) and his men begin working to repair and bring up their beloved sub despite the fact that their requisition orders rarely are filled.

Due to the fact that some of his men were reassigned to other duties after the raid, Sherman is granted some “replacement’s”–enter Lt. Nicholas Holden (Tony Curtis).

Holden is in the Navy not for the purpose of country but for the uniform so he can impress his rich girlfriend back home. Since he is no longer winning the rumba championships with the Admiral’s wife he must settle into a role on the Sea Tiger–scavenging for items to repair the sub.

With new and inventive ways of obtaining supplies (taking the wall from headquarters and stealing supplies from beneath the noses of MP’s) the Sea Tiger once again becomes sea worthy–barely.

None of the scavenging trouble Nick Holden causes Commander Sherman can even compare to the new passengers he brings aboard: a crew of female doctors, pregnant women and goats.

Cary Grant is charming as ever and deals with the many, many problems and situations thrown at him in such funny ways. Tony Curtis is equally charming and lends very much to this film.

The supporting cast can be likened to the “Down Periscope” crew of 1959. Each character brings something new and unusual to the storyline.

You definitely will not be disappointed if you buy this DVD. I recommend it highly.

Three of Dean’s half hour tv dramas are presented here with lots of extras. I AM A FOOL and THE UNLIGHTED ROAD are well known but SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE is a find- thought lost and not seen for half a century.

Dean is brilliant in these three very different performances, giving us a kaleidoscope of what he was capable of. He is vulnerable and yearning in I AM A FOOL, confident but sensitive in THE UNLIGHTED ROAD, and macho/sexy in BRIEFCASE. In fact, his performance in the latter makes one wish he had played Liliom or Billy Bigelow (LILIOM/CAROUSEL) – it’s a case study for the perfect interpretation of that role.

Dean was incredibly sexy and incredibly talented – his talent as displayed in the dozens of tv dramas he appeared in showcase his abilities far more than the three released Hollywood films. Any fan of Dean’s must collect these performances – there are a number of them out there on DVD and VHS: HARVEST, THE BELLS OF COCKAIGNE, HILL NUMBER ONE; I AM A FOOL; THE UNLIGHTED ROAD; SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE; LONG TIME TILL DAWN; ABRAHAM LINCOLN, etc.

This is a must-own rarity DVD for every Dean fan.

I agree this set contains a great selection of material. I’m pleased with the DVD quality. But, unfortunately, there is a “Stardust Records” logo 3 times during Something For An Empty Briefcase. None of the other material has this logo. Had I known this, I would not have purchased this set. I must deduct one star for this desecreation of an otherwise great set.

Christie Like is comic and action-packed. A dusky female cop out to hold the man out of her face and the drugs out of the hood. Teresa Graves gives a unbelievable performance, proof that Pam Grier isn’t the waste all be all when it comes to women in blaxploitation movies.

…P>I like it! A lot. … The tape spent quite some time on the bookshelf but now that I have finally seen it I am in esteem! It must be the box art that attach me off, a garrish watercolor blending an approximation of Teresa Graves’ face with Pam Grier’s, uh, other attributes. Not that I would know anything about it but the dialog sounds totally ad-lib and incredibly cold all at the same time. The IMDB lists what appear to be TV comedy gigs and Teresa Graves really displays the timing of a huge comedian. The IMDB bio for Teresa Graves consists of unbiased one lousy cryptic sentence, saying that she curtailed her career because she allowed her religion to limit her role choices. On the basis of this one film alone I gather that hard to bear. The title character is sexy, tough and frosty, the very poster girl of an independent woman.

It was a bit irregular watching this film because to me she looked so grand like Whitney Houston, a taller, fitter, Whitney Houston with a mountainous sense of humor. Oh, and one of her junkie contacts looks exactly like the girl from reveal day THE PARKERS TV prove. So queer!

The only reason for me to sustain the fifth star is the dreadful audio and so-so visual quality of the budget tape published by Ideal Enterprises.

First, the good news: this movie is astounding. The opening riot scene is so realistic it’s scary. The story, the artwork, the visuals, the soundtrack, all excellent. Some have complained it’s too slow. I don’t know why. There’s no need to complain about how long it takes to get from Point A to Point B if the journey is as interesting as this one is. It’s an excellent anime that is not too hard to follow (looking at the personnel flowchart helps keep track of who’s who), yet it shows an intelligence and complexity far above the typical anime offering. And the visuals are so gorgeous, so realistic. Even the muted color scheme is evocative of the tone of the movie.

So, why only 4 stars? Well, if you buy the 2-disc Special Edition, I have one question: How’s your Japanese? Oh, the menu for the extras disc is in English, but all the interviews, everything, is in Japanese. No alternate audio. No subtitles. All Japanese all the time. Please note that the movie has both English audio and subtitles (as well as the original Japanese), but the extras disc does not. So, unless you speak fluent Japanese, save your money and just buy the single-disc movie-only version.

I just saw this film in theaters. It has got to be the most emotional film that got to me since perhaps Schindler’s List. JIN-ROH, THE WOLF BRIGADE could maybe be described as a “politico-military love tragedy thriller”. Produced by the renowned studio Production I.G., with a script by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), this is a very strong debut for young director Hiroyuki Okiura.

This film looks incredible from beginning to end. Unfortunately, this may be the last anime movie to be done using hardly any computer assistance. The anime employs over 80,000 hand-painted cells and has taken 3 years to make. The character designs are excellent and individualistic(characters actually look Japanese. No large eyes to be found). There is great attention to detail in the movements of the people and objects on screen. Everything moves realistically down to the last motion. I also liked the dark and muted color scheme. There were many instances where I could question if I was watching animation or not. In fact, I think this movie looks more realistic than the real world.

The sound is excellent. There is sound everywhere in this film from the murky and creepy sounds of the tunnels to the chirping birds flying through the town. The guns used by the Panzers sound *powerful*, the cars cough, and the trees rustle. Like the animation, everything is done down to the last detail.

The music is written by Hajime Mizuguchi (Please Save My Earth/Vision of Escaflowne) which is melancholic, eerie and beautiful. It fits the film perfectly. I only wish that there was more of it since the film doesn’t have much music in it. Everything is well composed and creates the perfect atmosphere for the scene it’s in. I own the OST myself and listen to it almost everyday. The one track that I know will stick in your head is the ending theme which was composed by Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus/Vision of Excaflowne). The ending theme brought me to tears the first time I heard it in the movie (which I’d like to note is sung by Gabrielle Robin). I highly recommend that you buy the soundtrack.

All of the Japanese voice actors voices fit perfectly and every voice expresses the character’s emotions. From the cold and serious voice of Fuse to the quiet and sincere voice of Kei, this film delivers some great voice acting.

The version of the film I saw in theaters was English dubbed but it was done carefully and each of the voices fit the characters excellently.

Jin-roh tells a dark tale, of the tragedy of the failure of the human spirit. The way out seems to be there, but is it? The fairy tale must reach its ending. A wolf is still a wolf even if for a while he can masquerade as a man. Hopefully this movie will be released soon in the US so more people can experience it strange and dark beauty.

The fights all over Karakura continue to rage between the Bounts and Ichigo’s little gang, and even the addition of some seasoned Soul Reaper lieutenants doesn’t guarantee success. “Bleach Volume 21″ is basically a solid slab of continuous combat against the Bounts’ superpowered dolls, although the third episode on here feels like it was rushed through production while most of the staff (and one voice actor) was sick.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bleach, Vol. 21! Click Here

Ichigo’s hopeless fight against Koga and Dalk is interrupted by Kira’s sudden intervention, and his zanpakuto turns out to be perfectly suited to defeating the solid steel doll. And Yoshi’s fight with Rukia and Orihime is interrupted when the crazed Mabashi decides that HE wants to fight them — and his doll burrows into Rukia’s body and turns her into a killing machine. Despite the intervention of Shuhei Hisagi, Orihime is faced with a horrible decision: kill Rukia to save her and her friends, or find some other way of freeing her from Mabashi.

Meanwhile, Chad, Ururu and Noba are joined by Rangiku Matsumoto, just in time to fight the aged Bount Sawatari, whose doll Baura turns out to be a vast fish that can swim through solid objects. Energy blasts, special powers and even living beings all get transported into a dimension inside Baura — meaning that Rangiku and Chad have little chance of beating Sawatari, especially when Noba is injured in the fight. And in the Soul Society, a new problem has cropped up…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bleach, Vol. 21! Click Here

About 90% of “Bleach Volume 21″ is devoted to action sequences — giant wooden fish, exploding silos, flying flower-foxes, eruptions of kido energy and the occasional blast from tiny angry ninja fairy Tsubaki. Everybody is fighting the Bount and getting beaten up because of it, and at times it becomes a pretty bleak story, with little humor or levity to lighten the situation.

Fortunately the writers take some brief time outs where the good guys regroup, strategize, and seek medical help for their wounded. And the action slows down at the end of the fourth episode, taking us to the Soul Society where an invisible intruder stirs up a little more mystery for the Soul Reapers (particularly an irritable Ikkaku). And it seems like we might be about to learn why the Bounts want Uryu so much.

The third episode is a bit of a headscratcher, though — it sounds like someone other than Jamieson Price is voicing Chad, and doing a horrible imitation. And the animation is very wobbly; an otherwise cool fight scene at the climax is marred by Chad and Sawatari suddenly developing huge, lipless, teeth-filled mouths and lots of facial lines.

It’s rather nice to see some of the familiar Soul Reaper characters such as Rangiku, Shuhei and Kira, who show that they’re quite powerful and sometimes clever. And there are brief appearances near the end by Byakuya, Zaraki and the ever-feisty Ikkaku. In the world of the living, there’s a rather touching scene that reinforces the friendship between Rukia and Orihime, as well as Orihime’s determination to help her friend… even if it is a bit too much like Healing With The Power of Luv.

And cute little Noba (who has some truly awe-inspiring abs) gets a crush on Rangiku. It doesn’t get cuter than that.

The twenty-first volume of “Bleach” is crammed with intricate and deadly fighting, but the ending hints at some further plot twists yet to come. Except for the awkward third episode, this is a sure-fire winner.

The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Dead is, of course, for the original, uncut, unadulterated edition. The original is, quite simply, the most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to horror classics like Diabolique (the original French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Shining. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years old on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film still gives me the chills whenever I see it (usually at Halloween).

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was curious to see what they termed as “new footage.” What I got was a horrible mess that butchered the original film, removed the original music for a terrible synthesizer score and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a new character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the original is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the original cast look like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the original. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the original 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the new footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a new ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “new” version is a piece of trash that desecrates the most frightening film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

30 Anniversary version: No Stars

This review pertains only to the Millennium Edition DVD of Night of the Living Dead.

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Dead has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to clarify.

This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Dead fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did right by this new edition.

George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the back of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the picture and sound are good, and though this doesn’t exactly contain the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the excellent 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the recent double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You get a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but still great); an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen); the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition); two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating portion of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually boring but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to produce Night of the Living Dead.

THIS is the right edition of Night of the Living Dead, the one to get for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the necessary people (notice that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the way it wants to be seen.
Now I’m waiting for a deluxe release of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead…

From the creators of “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda”, Academy award winner Reese Witherspoon leads a ragtag team of unlikely heroes in the animated blockbuster “Monsters vs. Aliens”. When the strange energy of a meteorite causes her to mysteriously grow to a towering 49-feet-11-inches, Susan Murphy (Witherspoon) is taken by the military to a top secret compound where the government has kept the existence of monsters hidden from the public for decades. Susan, dubbed Ginormica, and her new monstrous friends are called into action to save the world from the evil alien leader Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson). Though certainly not the best animated movie of the year, “Monsters vs. Aliens” is a very enjoyable parody of classic Sci-fi movies of the 1950s. The animated movie offers some amusing characters and loads of action and humor. The 3-D animation is very impressive and further intensifies the whole viewing experience. The all-star voice cast also includes Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Stephen Colbert and Kiefer Sutherland.

“Monsters vs. Aliens” makes its way onto Blu-Ray with a top-notch presentation and a great set of extras. The animated movie is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format. Like many animated movies in high definition, “Monsters vs. Aliens” looks fantastic. The HD transfer would have been perfect if it wasn’t for the lack of a 3-D option. Its 5.1 Dolby TrueHD sound is also excellent. Special features include several behind-the-scenes featurettes (Modern Monster Movie Making & The Tech of Monsters vs. Aliens), an audio commentary track with the filmmakers, the enjoyable 13-minute “B.O.B.’s Big Break” 3-D animated short, three deleted scenes, paddle ball 3-D game, three sing-along segments with the film’s characters, and sneak peaks of other DreamWorks animated films. Overall, “Monsters vs. Aliens” scores a “B+”.

Very enjoyable movie, especially for older kids and adults. I expected to see the movie in 3D and was greatly disappointed to find that only to B.O.B. Extras in 3D. Particularly since all of the other Extras materials couldn’t stop gushing about HP & Intel. I have Spy Kids 3D on DVD and it was a very successful home view presentation.

I actually bought the Blu-ray version on the single disc, and in my opinion the packaging puts lots of emphasis on 3D glasses and no indication that they’re useless for the Feature Film, or that the Feature is in 2D only. I could not find it addressed anywhere on the packaging, at least in a font size I can read.

“The Dream Is Alive” is a beautifully-done, albeit fairly short (36 minutes), IMAX film.

Narrated expertly (as usual) by veteran newscaster Walter Cronkite, this program takes the viewer into space via NASA’s remarkable Space Shuttle Orbiters. We see the astronauts working, eating, and sleeping in the vacuum of space, as they orbit hundreds of miles above our Earth at a speed of 17,500 MPH.

We also see three breathtaking Shuttle launches (including one beautiful nighttime lift-off) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, all of which are photographed from different viewpoints and with crystal-clear clarity. These launches look magnificent on this DVD release!

This program was originally filmed in 1984. In addition to the copyright date on the packaging (which is actually 1985), we can tell the timeframe of this footage by the missions being photographed for the program — including STS-41-C (launched on April 6, 1984), which was a mission of historical significance, marking the first time a satellite had ever been repaired in space.

Another Shuttle mission we get a first-hand, in-space glimpse of is STS-41-D, which took to the skies on August 30, 1984.

Sadly, two of the astronauts we see performing their duties in this IMAX presentation (Francis Scobee and Judy Resnik) were lost in the Challenger disaster less than two years after the filming of this program.

The DVD gives us a good 5.1 Dolby Surround soundtrack; while the video is presented in Full Frame (1.33:1), which is the original aspect ratio of the film.

In addition to the splendid-looking (and sounding) launches, we also see some rather unique camera angles while the Shuttle is landing (one sequence filmed from — I think — one of the “chase” planes that always fly alongside the spacecraft as it’s landing). Great footage here!

There’s also time given to provide some gorgeous pictures of our blue and green planet as photographed by the Shuttle astronauts on their various missions. The “Pause” function on the ol’ DVD Player comes in handy when viewing these pretty Earthly images. You can “pause” them with perfect clarity too. Not a sign of blurriness to be found. Ah, the beauty of DVD. :)

The “pause” button is also great for freeze-framing the spectacular launch footage shown here as well. Just like a picture postcard it is. :)

Even with its brief running time, there’s still plenty here for space fanatics to sink their teeth into.

This is one space-related DVD to watch over and over again. A class act all the way.

This is the second or so IMAX film I remember seeing. I think I saw it in 1986, soon after the Challenger disaster, although the film is dated 1985 (Challenger was lost on 28 January 1986.) Remember when they used to show these movies in big inflatable bubble-buildings at the State Fair?

The beautiful scenes of Earth from space, narration by the immortal Walter Cronkite, inspirational music, and scenes with astronauts Resnick and Scobee, later lost with Challenger, make this everything that I think an IMAX movie should be – awe-inspiring, a little patriotic, and flat-out spectacular. This film always brings tears to my eyes and reminds me that the American spirit that made the space program possible can be used to accomplish remarkable things.

Technical note: I expected unbelievably fine image quality from a DVD of an IMAX movie but the master used to make this DVD was not completely pristine. About the same quality as a regular 35mm movie.
