This Summer of 2009 is a Lucy Summer! In July we are getting the first season of The Lucy Indicate, thanks to CBS/Paramount and on August 25th, we are getting the first season of Here’s Lucy, thanks to MPI Home Video. Some of the gigantic shows of Here’s Lucy have already been on dvd by Yowl!Factory, and it is a broad location, but now we finally rep to have all of it complete!
When I heard Here’s Lucy Season 1 is being set out by MPI Home Video, I immediately contacted MPI for more information- especially about the quality of the video! For anyone who is familiar with MPI Home Video’s quality of their dvd’s, you know they can be sinful or beneficial. MPI keep out the first season of The Beverly Hillbillies, The Honeymooners 6 sets and Hullabaloo’s- all very awful quality, loaded with graininess and scratches. MPI also effect out The Doris Day Show- all 5 seasons and Family Affair’s all 5 seasons, and the quality is noble, very dapper and crystal sure! MPI is also known for putting out all of a show’s seasons separately and then in a complete place later on. I spoke to MPI directly to salvage out the quality they are putting into Here’s Lucy Season 1, and they assured me that they are remastering the modern 35 mm film, in exactly the same intention they did for Doris Day and Family Affair. This means the dvd’s will be absolutely sterling in color, crystal obvious intriguing recount and a well-organized film! As a great Lucy fan, this was enormous news for me! They also stated, that on June 30th, 2009, they are putting out the first of The Lucille Ball Specials dvd. These are two specials that Lucy made after Here’s Lucy, starring with Dean Martin and Jackie Gleason. Both Here’s Lucy and The Lucille Ball Specials will have extra’s included. I was really glad to glimpse that the film quality is absolutely marvelous on this first season! The perfect record, magnificent color and detailed sharpness are beyond my expectations!

The explain started out with weaker than expected ratings, but gradually picked up during it’s 6 season speed, from 1968 to 1974. Lucy played a widower, Lucy Carter with 2 teenage children Kim and Craig Carter. The children were played by her real-life children Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.. Their Uncle Harry was played by Gale Gordon and Vivian Vance also made guest star appearances in this exhibit. Lucy, as a single mom, worked at the Fresh Employment Agency, which allowed her to exclaim, dance and act with the many fabulous special guest stars she featured on this demonstrate. In this first season alone, some of the guest stars were Jack Benny, Jackie Gleason, Shelly Winters, Eva Gabor, Wayne Newton, Van Johnson, Wally Cox, Carol Burnett, Cesar Romero, Victor Buono, Howard Keel and Tennessee Ernie Ford. This demonstrate never got the number 1 ratings that I Care For Lucy received, or even the number 2 region that The Lucy Indicate finished with, so it was rarely syndicated on tv, making many of these expansive shows rarely seen for decades. For Lucy fans, the summer of 2009 is one we will never forget, as we will finally have The Lucy Prove, Here’s Lucy and the first of The Lucille Ball Specials dvd, to behold whenever we want after so many years of wishing!

Lucille Ball began her third weekly series on CBS on September 23rd, 1968. After selling “The Lucy Explain” to Paramount, Lucy wanted to maintain her hold expose, so she created “Lucille Ball Productions” to compose her modern sitcom. Lucy had already finished an unbelievable rush on CBS with her “I Cherish Lucy” exhibit in the ’50’s, and her 1962-1968 series “The Lucy Prove” never went out of the top 10. It was very necessary for CBS to retain her as the network knew Lucy had a sincere fan unfriendly that wanted to notice her week after week. “The Lucy Point To” finished its final season in 1968 at #2 in the national Nielsen numbers, so expectations were high that “Here’s Lucy” would be an even bigger hit. Lucy had nothing to pains about: both the fans and critics loved her novel note, with “Here’s Lucy” staying in the top 10 in its first three years.

“Here’s Lucy” was different than Lucy’s other two series in that she cast her real-life children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., as her on-screen kids Kim and Craig. Lucy also brought support the wonderful Gale Gordon as her brother-in-law Harry and boss at the Recent Employment Agency in Los Angeles, which was the setting of the series. Lucy played Gale’s crazy secretary. The wacky redhead continued to beget viewers laugh for six more years on CBS, and many fans, including this one, fill “Here’s Lucy” was Lucille Ball’s best television work. Lucy has even admitted that out of all her shows, this one was her common.

As the 1970’s arrived CBS wanted to change its image as the “rural network” by canning shows that featured longtime tv personalities like Ed Sullivan. Lucille Ball was a different myth however. “Here’s Lucy” would continue well into the ’70’s as CBS’ top-rated present. In 1970-1971 “Here’s Lucy” finished the year as CBS’ #1 program!

In 2004 “Here’s Lucy” made its debut on DVD with a 24 episode boxset featuring the best episodes of the series. That boxset has a ton of special bonuses including commentary by Lucy’s kids, rare network TV promos for the exhibit, a noteworthy more. In this unique “Here’s Lucy” Season One Boxset special features will include novel videotaped interviews never seen before and unusual introductions by both Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.. Other rare gems are Featurettes, Mask Tests, home movies, making of the main title, and a rare interview with Gale Gordon. It is fabulous to search for MPI bringing relieve this beloved point to that has been rarely seen on television in the past two decades. The series had a CBS daytime accelerate from May-November 1977, and in 1982 “Here’s Lucy” went into national syndication. The sitcom has rarely been seen on cable stations as it surprisingly does not bring in suited ratings. In the slack ’90’s PAX TV aired the reveal for awhile then it disappeared. The studio also promises to release every season in individual boxsets so that is something to applaud.

This boxset contains all 24 shows of the first year uncut and digitally remastered from the studio’s 35 mm negatives for noble video and audio clarity. A total of 144 episodes of “Here’s Lucy” were produced. The first three seasons were fimed at Paramount studios in Hollywood, but the last three years were shot at Universal. The most renowned episode was the season premiere of the third season in 1970 featuring Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. That episode catapulted “Here’s Lucy” to the top of the ratings and save Lucy and the Burtons on the shroud of TV Guide that week.

In the show’s first season boxset many stars are featured including Jackie Gleason, Shelley Winters, Jack Benny, Wayne Newton, and more. The pilot of “Here’s Lucy” is included called “Mod, Mod Lucy”, where Lucy has to form in the site of her daughter in a band. Lucy tries to explain, albeit with her mouthing the words to a relate, and she proves she is quite a dancer. You will laugh hysterically when Lucy comes out donning a gloomy wig, trying to be a teenager. She really fits in with the younger generation!

Many other celebrities graced “Here’s Lucy” over its rush including Eva Gabor, Carol Burnett, Ann-Margret, Johnny Carson, and more. Vivian Vance also made many guest-star appearances over the years as Aunt Viv to the delight of fans everywhere.

Don’t forget too that “The Lucy Display” makes it first-time debut on DVD in July with the Complete First Season boxset. That series too is favorable.

The movie is called “Traitor,” and the implication is that the main character, played by Don Cheadle, has betrayed his own country. But it’s nowhere near that simple. Some think he’s a traitor to the United States while others think he’s a traitor to Islam. He may be a traitor to his own beliefs, his loyalties divided between his Muslim faith and his American upbringing. By the end of the film, no one is any closer to understanding what he believes, himself least of all. He’s a double agent frequently confronted by conflicting ideologies, and it’s slowly but surely tearing him apart. One way this movie succeeds is that we’re able to feel for this character no matter what side he’s on; we can sense the anguish he feels, the torment of being a misfit in every culture he immerses himself in. We see in his face the unease and guilt he’s forced to live with everyday.

Cheadle plays Samir Horn, who was born in Sudan but raised in the United States. Thirty years ago, his father was killed in a terrorist attack, although it’s unclear which side was responsible; it may have been an anti-Muslim faction, but it may also have been devout Muslims who opposed his beliefs. Whatever the case, Horn is now a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant for the United States Army, someone trained to infiltrate terrorist organizations and gather information. It seems his loyalties have shifted; while in Yemen, he’s caught selling detonators to a group of jihadists, and after a brief shootout, everyone is arrested. In prison, he befriends Omar (Saïd Taghmaoui), who is apparently in league with people on the outside, people willing to risk incarceration or death to free their brother Muslims. A frenetic jailbreak ensues. Not long after, Horn becomes entangled in a terrorist conspiracy, one that would result in several major attacks on American soil.

Two FBI agents have been assigned to locate and arrest Horn. One is Roy Clayton (Guy Pearce), who, interestingly enough, once considered World Religions as a college major. He claims to take his own Christian faith seriously, but unlike Horn with the Koran, we never see him reading from the Bible or quoting any of its passages. We’re never told what Max Archer (Neal McDonough) believes, although it’s obvious that, as far as his job is concerned, he’s all about getting results as quickly as possible; in an early scene, he gets impatient with Horn and subsequently punches him in the stomach. Clayton is much more calm and collected, and he understands that you get information from a suspect by pushing his buttons, not by letting him push yours. Indeed, Horn is a tough nut to crack, probably because he knows how to keep secrets from both sides.

To describe the plot any further would not only give too much away, it would also require a lot of explaining, more so than anyone would be willing to read. As Horn says, “The truth is complicated.” It would be more accurate to say that the truth is elusive, simply because I’m not convinced he knows what the truth is. He probably no longer knows which side represents good and which side represents evil. His beliefs are divided between what he reads in the Koran and what he sees going on; one passage states that killing one man is like killing all mankind, yet he’s surrounded by Islamic extremists who commit murder to get their point across. He’s serious about his faith, but it’s clear he doesn’t always understand it. He certainly doesn’t understand how certain ideas can be misconstrued out of all reason, such as Takfiri, or blending in. A Pakistani terrorist named Fareed (Aly Khan) baffles Horn by saying that jihadists living in America drink alcohol and eat pork in order to blend in. Both acts go against Islamic beliefs.

Horn would probably argue that murder, no matter how justified, also goes against Islamic beliefs (I would make the same argument, although I’m well aware that many people would not). If there were no jihadists, if terrorism were to be eradicated entirely, Horn would not need to be a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant. He would not have to infiltrate enemy hideouts and pretend to be on their side. Only then would his mind be at ease; he could worship in peace without having to worry about suspicious activity in American and Muslim communities. Is it unreasonable to suggest that the vast majority of Muslims long for the same peace of mind? I don’t think so. Neither is the idea that there’s a gigantic difference between jihad terrorists and those of Islamic faith.

That may ultimately be the point “Traitor” is trying to make, although it’s difficult to tell with a story actively trying to be ambiguous. Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff and producer/co-story creator Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin) have crafted a political drama that forces the audience to think really hard, more about the main character’s beliefs than about the actual plot. Themes of not belonging and divided loyalties are certainly not new, but that doesn’t mean they’re no longer used effectively; “Traitor” succeeds on many levels, not the least of which is Don Cheadle’s believable performance. He above all else is what gets the story off the ground, allowing it to be much more than a run-of-the-mill thriller. He adds genuine emotional touches in the subtlest of ways, from precise eye movements to random breathing patterns. Essentially, he makes it real, especially since he never reveals which side his character feels most connected with.

Traitor is a fantastic thriller starring Don Cheadle as Samir Horn, a Muslim who was born in Sudan and moved to America as a teenager. He grows up to be a Special Forces soldier for the US, and as the movie begins, we see him moving through the Middle East selling explosives.

His fate crosses with two FBI agents, played by Guy Pearce and Neal McDonough. Soon the two are crisscrossing the globe hunting Samir, who is becoming more and more involved with a cell led by a terrorist mastermind.

The film is written and directed as a great thriller with enough action and suspense to keep you ocuupied and guessing, but not to the extent that it comes off like a routine action movie trying to be more than it is. The film has several twists and surprises and keeps the viewer engaged throughout.

But everything is held together is by Cheadle, who burnishes his reputation as one of Hollywood’s greatest talents. His Samir is at once devious, treacherous, loving, compassionate, stubborn, and dangerous. Traitor is a great film, but it would not possess the same impact with a lesser talent as its star.

This is a delightful romantic comedy with a very engaging main actress (Marguerite Moreau). After spending years as a “jerk magnet”, she is about to quit the dating scene when lo and behold, two decent guys with real potential come along. Like they say, “it never rains but it pours”. She is then faced with the opposite problem of deciding which guy would be the better choice. While watching it, I didn’t really know how things would turn out because both guys she was into were actually quite likeable. Fortunately everything ends happily. Well it is a romantic comedy.

I thought customers might want to know the specs for this DVD seeing as Amazon has continued its bad habit of omitting tech specs from newer releases. The DVD is by Screen Media Films. It is in it’s original aspect ratio of 1.85.1 (enhanced for widescreen TV). Colors are accurate. There is quite a bit of film grain but not too distracting. My only quibble with the presentation is that black levels are closer to a dull grey so that the transfer lacks a sense of depth and richness. Soundwise it’s in 2.0 and 5.1 surround with pretty decent sound reproduction. There are no close captions or subtitles contrary to what it says on the backcover and on Amazon.

All in all a very enjoyable movie. Definitely worth a viewing.

EASY is a big surprise. On paper, it is a rather simple story. A woman, tired of being seen as the “easy” girl, decides to try to be celibate for 90 days. Sounds like the rather awful Josh Hartnett film 40 DAYS 40 NIGHTS? It isn’t.

But, the cast really makes this one work. Marguerite Moreau gives a star making performance as the lead. I had never heard of her before seeing this film, now I am looking forward to her next film.

The rest of the cast is terrific as well, filled with familiar actors, whose names may not be that familiar. Naveen Andrews (TV’s LOST) and Brian F. O’Byrne (the priest in MILLION DOLLAR BABY) play her two boyfriends. D.B. Woodside (TV’s BUFFY and 24) plays a neighbor. And Emily Deschanel (Zooey’s look alike older sister) plays her sister. They all make this a very entertaining feature.

The film may not be anything groundbreaking, but it is a refreshing change.

The DVD has no extras beyond filmographies for the cast.

This is one of the best family movies I have ever seen! It was 20 years ago, in the “old” country, and I am not Russian – so there is no patriotism here.
The story is fantasic, the cast is at their best, and the Russian cinematogrpahy in adapting fairy tales has a long and excellent tradition.
This is a movie about values in life, about searching for happiness and the meaning of life, and I am extatic it is now available on DVD.

This is one of the memorable movies in my life. I watched it as a kid and loved it.
So thrilled that it’s on DVD now. I want my child to see it now and hopefully enjoy as much as I did when I was a kid.

wow, we’ve got some pretty heavy critics here! my guess is that anyone who doesnt like the kentuckian is either a sissy or reviews way to many movies and needs to get some sunshine. as a boy i was fasinated by this movie. it was easy to be romanced by this film because of the boy and his dog and how he prefered hannah over the school marm, and is ultimatly right about her in the in the end. the movie knows exactly where its going(if you are paying attention)and has a beautiful way of showing you what things must have been like back then,i.e. the singing black entertainers prompting lancaster of “texas”"texas” texas”!, when the boat comes to town. this is a wonderful movie for children that havent yet been polluted by the endless amount of crap that unfortunatly is in abundance nowadays. this film still has enough drama and human interest with an actual, real substance for any age. its a mere record of what life was like in one part of the world at one time and its done quite well if you let the movie take you instead of find whats wrong with it.

One of only two films directed by Lancaster, “The Kentuckian” is neither a rousing success nor a glaring disaster. The direction is not all that stylish, but it is no embarrassment. Bernard Herrmann adds to the picture with his musical score.

The story is about Kentucky frontiersman Big Eli, and his son Little Eli, fleeing an infamous family feud and looking for a new life in Texas. They stop along the way to free a bondswoman from her contract, which costs them all of their “Texas money”, the funds set aside for passage to Texas.

Big Eli goes to work for his brother (John McIntire), in the tobacco business, and life among townspeople changes his plans, much to his son’s dismay.

There is romance, and some pretty fair action with Lancaster in a whip fight. The best moment is Lancaster rushing to reach a shooter as he reloads his flintlock rifle in real-time.

Walter Matthau has a good turn as a menacing town boss, and John Carradine does a marvelous portrayal of a medicine man/snake oil salesman. Una Merkel plays Eli’s sister-in-law.

Dianne Foster is ravishing as the freed bondswoman Hannah. She guest-starred in a ton of TV classics in the 50’s and 60’s, including “Wagon Train”, “Perry Mason”, “The Fugitive”, “Honey West”, “Petticoat Junction”, and “Route 66″.

At times, the picture does not seem to know where it’s going. At other times, the picture is very cohesive. The DVD transfer isn’t bad, either. Well worth a viewing, “The Kentuckian” is a real treat for Lancaster fans.

Cary Grant is cast as the commander of the Sea Tiger, a sub held together by a lick and a promise. Tony Curtis is cast as Lt Nick Holden. He was assigned sea duty as a punishment, and is very outside of his element. Since the country is at war, supplies are very scarce, and Holden discovers that he does have a talent in being a thief. If they can’t get a requisition filled, Mr. Holden can find it. This crew has one catastrophe after another, and then they get stuck with team of nurses that are stranded. This is a hilarious movie that will make you laugh out loud. The cast is superb, and not just the talent of Grant and Curtis, but all the supporting players.

Tony Curtis and Cary Grant are perfect in this movie.

Cary Grant is the Commander of the Sea Tiger, a submarine with more problems than crew members.

His troubles begin when the sub sinks before even leaving the harbor during a Japanese raid. Commander Sherman (Grant) and his men begin working to repair and bring up their beloved sub despite the fact that their requisition orders rarely are filled.

Due to the fact that some of his men were reassigned to other duties after the raid, Sherman is granted some “replacement’s”–enter Lt. Nicholas Holden (Tony Curtis).

Holden is in the Navy not for the purpose of country but for the uniform so he can impress his rich girlfriend back home. Since he is no longer winning the rumba championships with the Admiral’s wife he must settle into a role on the Sea Tiger–scavenging for items to repair the sub.

With new and inventive ways of obtaining supplies (taking the wall from headquarters and stealing supplies from beneath the noses of MP’s) the Sea Tiger once again becomes sea worthy–barely.

None of the scavenging trouble Nick Holden causes Commander Sherman can even compare to the new passengers he brings aboard: a crew of female doctors, pregnant women and goats.

Cary Grant is charming as ever and deals with the many, many problems and situations thrown at him in such funny ways. Tony Curtis is equally charming and lends very much to this film.

The supporting cast can be likened to the “Down Periscope” crew of 1959. Each character brings something new and unusual to the storyline.

You definitely will not be disappointed if you buy this DVD. I recommend it highly.

Three of Dean’s half hour tv dramas are presented here with lots of extras. I AM A FOOL and THE UNLIGHTED ROAD are well known but SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE is a find- thought lost and not seen for half a century.

Dean is brilliant in these three very different performances, giving us a kaleidoscope of what he was capable of. He is vulnerable and yearning in I AM A FOOL, confident but sensitive in THE UNLIGHTED ROAD, and macho/sexy in BRIEFCASE. In fact, his performance in the latter makes one wish he had played Liliom or Billy Bigelow (LILIOM/CAROUSEL) – it’s a case study for the perfect interpretation of that role.

Dean was incredibly sexy and incredibly talented – his talent as displayed in the dozens of tv dramas he appeared in showcase his abilities far more than the three released Hollywood films. Any fan of Dean’s must collect these performances – there are a number of them out there on DVD and VHS: HARVEST, THE BELLS OF COCKAIGNE, HILL NUMBER ONE; I AM A FOOL; THE UNLIGHTED ROAD; SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE; LONG TIME TILL DAWN; ABRAHAM LINCOLN, etc.

This is a must-own rarity DVD for every Dean fan.

I agree this set contains a great selection of material. I’m pleased with the DVD quality. But, unfortunately, there is a “Stardust Records” logo 3 times during Something For An Empty Briefcase. None of the other material has this logo. Had I known this, I would not have purchased this set. I must deduct one star for this desecreation of an otherwise great set.

Christie Like is comic and action-packed. A dusky female cop out to hold the man out of her face and the drugs out of the hood. Teresa Graves gives a unbelievable performance, proof that Pam Grier isn’t the waste all be all when it comes to women in blaxploitation movies.

Not that I would know anything about it but the dialog sounds totally ad-lib and incredibly cold all at the same time. The IMDB lists what appear to be TV comedy gigs and Teresa Graves really displays the timing of a huge comedian. The IMDB bio for Teresa Graves consists of unbiased one lousy cryptic sentence, saying that she curtailed her career because she allowed her religion to limit her role choices. On the basis of this one film alone I gather that hard to bear. The title character is sexy, tough and frosty, the very poster girl of an independent woman.

It was a bit irregular watching this film because to me she looked so grand like Whitney Houston, a taller, fitter, Whitney Houston with a mountainous sense of humor. Oh, and one of her junkie contacts looks exactly like the girl from reveal day THE PARKERS TV prove. So queer!

The only reason for me to sustain the fifth star is the dreadful audio and so-so visual quality of the budget tape published by Ideal Enterprises.

First, the good news: this movie is astounding. The opening riot scene is so realistic it’s scary. The story, the artwork, the visuals, the soundtrack, all excellent. Some have complained it’s too slow. I don’t know why. There’s no need to complain about how long it takes to get from Point A to Point B if the journey is as interesting as this one is. It’s an excellent anime that is not too hard to follow (looking at the personnel flowchart helps keep track of who’s who), yet it shows an intelligence and complexity far above the typical anime offering. And the visuals are so gorgeous, so realistic. Even the muted color scheme is evocative of the tone of the movie.

So, why only 4 stars? Well, if you buy the 2-disc Special Edition, I have one question: How’s your Japanese? Oh, the menu for the extras disc is in English, but all the interviews, everything, is in Japanese. No alternate audio. No subtitles. All Japanese all the time. Please note that the movie has both English audio and subtitles (as well as the original Japanese), but the extras disc does not. So, unless you speak fluent Japanese, save your money and just buy the single-disc movie-only version.

I just saw this film in theaters.It has got to be the most emotional film that got to me since perhaps Schindler’s List. JIN-ROH, THE WOLF BRIGADE could maybe be described as a “politico-military love tragedy thriller”. Produced by the renowned studio Production I.G., with a script by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), this is a very strong debut for young director Hiroyuki Okiura.

This film looks incredible from beginning to end. Unfortunately, this may be the last anime movie to be done using hardly any computer assistance. The anime employs over 80,000 hand-painted cells and has taken 3 years to make. The character designs are excellent and individualistic(characters actually look Japanese.No large eyes to be found). There is great attention to detail in the movements of the people and objects on screen. Everything moves realistically down to the last motion. I also liked the dark and muted color scheme. There were many instances where I could question if I was watching animation or not. In fact, I think this movie looks more realistic than the real world.

The sound is excellent. There is sound everywhere in this film from the murky and creepy sounds of the tunnels to the chirping birds flying through the town. The guns used by the Panzers sound *powerful*, the cars cough, and the trees rustle. Like the animation, everything is done down to the last detail.

The music is written by Hajime Mizuguchi (Please Save My Earth/Vision of Escaflowne) which is melancholic, eerie and beautiful. It fits the film perfectly. I only wish that there was more of it since the film doesn’t have much music in it. Everything is well composed and creates the perfect atmosphere for the scene it’s in. I own the OST myself and listen to it almost everyday. The one track that I know will stick in your head is the ending theme which was composed by Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus/Vision of Excaflowne). The ending theme brought me to tears the first time I heard it in the movie (which I’d like to note is sung by Gabrielle Robin). I highly recommend that you buy the soundtrack.

All of the Japanese voice actors voices fit perfectly and every voice expresses the character’s emotions. From the cold and serious voice of Fuse to the quiet and sincere voice of Kei, this film delivers some great voice acting.

The version of the film I saw in theaters was English dubbed but it was done carefully and each of the voices fit the characters excellently.

Jin-roh tells a dark tale, of the tragedy of the failure of the human spirit. The way out seems to be there, but is it? The fairy tale must reach its ending. A wolf is still a wolf even if for a while he can masquerade as a man. Hopefully this movie will be released soon in the US so more people can experience it strange and dark beauty.
