The fights all over Karakura continue to rage between the Bounts and Ichigo’s little gang, and even the addition of some seasoned Soul Reaper lieutenants doesn’t guarantee success. “Bleach Volume 21″ is basically a solid slab of continuous combat against the Bounts’ superpowered dolls, although the third episode on here feels like it was rushed through production while most of the staff (and one voice actor) was sick.

Ichigo’s hopeless fight against Koga and Dalk is interrupted by Kira’s sudden intervention, and his zanpakuto turns out to be perfectly suited to defeating the solid steel doll. And Yoshi’s fight with Rukia and Orihime is interrupted when the crazed Mabashi decides that HE wants to fight them — and his doll burrows into Rukia’s body and turns her into a killing machine. Despite the intervention of Shuhei Hisagi, Orihime is faced with a horrible decision: kill Rukia to save her and her friends, or find some other way of freeing her from Mabashi.

Meanwhile, Chad, Ururu and Noba are joined by Rangiku Matsumoto, just in time to fight the aged Bount Sawatari, whose doll Baura turns out to be a vast fish that can swim through solid objects. Energy blasts, special powers and even living beings all get transported into a dimension inside Baura — meaning that Rangiku and Chad have little chance of beating Sawatari, especially when Noba is injured in the fight. And in the Soul Society, a new problem has cropped up…

About 90% of “Bleach Volume 21″ is devoted to action sequences — giant wooden fish, exploding silos, flying flower-foxes, eruptions of kido energy and the occasional blast from tiny angry ninja fairy Tsubaki. Everybody is fighting the Bount and getting beaten up because of it, and at times it becomes a pretty bleak story, with little humor or levity to lighten the situation.

Fortunately the writers take some brief time outs where the good guys regroup, strategize, and seek medical help for their wounded. And the action slows down at the end of the fourth episode, taking us to the Soul Society where an invisible intruder stirs up a little more mystery for the Soul Reapers (particularly an irritable Ikkaku). And it seems like we might be about to learn why the Bounts want Uryu so much.

The third episode is a bit of a headscratcher, though — it sounds like someone other than Jamieson Price is voicing Chad, and doing a horrible imitation. And the animation is very wobbly; an otherwise cool fight scene at the climax is marred by Chad and Sawatari suddenly developing huge, lipless, teeth-filled mouths and lots of facial lines.

It’s rather nice to see some of the familiar Soul Reaper characters such as Rangiku, Shuhei and Kira, who show that they’re quite powerful and sometimes clever. And there are brief appearances near the end by Byakuya, Zaraki and the ever-feisty Ikkaku. In the world of the living, there’s a rather touching scene that reinforces the friendship between Rukia and Orihime, as well as Orihime’s determination to help her friend… even if it is a bit too much like Healing With The Power of Luv.

And cute little Noba (who has some truly awe-inspiring abs) gets a crush on Rangiku. It doesn’t get cuter than that.

The twenty-first volume of “Bleach” is crammed with intricate and deadly fighting, but the ending hints at some further plot twists yet to come. Except for the awkward third episode, this is a sure-fire winner.

The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Dead is, of course, for the original, uncut, unadulterated edition. The original is, quite simply, the most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to horror classics like Diabolique (the original French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Shining. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years old on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film still gives me the chills whenever I see it (usually at Halloween).

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was curious to see what they termed as “new footage.” What I got was a horrible mess that butchered the original film, removed the original music for a terrible synthesizer score and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a new character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the original is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the original cast look like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the original. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the original 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the new footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a new ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “new” version is a piece of trash that desecrates the most frightening film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

30 Anniversary version: No Stars

This review pertains only to the Millennium Edition DVD of Night of the Living Dead.

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Dead has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to clarify.

This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Dead fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did right by this new edition.

George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the back of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the picture and sound are good, and though this doesn’t exactly contain the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the excellent 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the recent double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You get a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but still great); an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen); the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition); two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating portion of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually boring but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to produce Night of the Living Dead.

THIS is the right edition of Night of the Living Dead, the one to get for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the necessary people (notice that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the way it wants to be seen.
Now I’m waiting for a deluxe release of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead…

From the creators of “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda”, Academy award winner Reese Witherspoon leads a ragtag team of unlikely heroes in the animated blockbuster “Monsters vs. Aliens”. When the strange energy of a meteorite causes her to mysteriously grow to a towering 49-feet-11-inches, Susan Murphy (Witherspoon) is taken by the military to a top secret compound where the government has kept the existence of monsters hidden from the public for decades. Susan, dubbed Ginormica, and her new monstrous friends are called into action to save the world from the evil alien leader Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson). Though certainly not the best animated movie of the year, “Monsters vs. Aliens” is a very enjoyable parody of classic Sci-fi movies of the 1950s. The animated movie offers some amusing characters and loads of action and humor. The 3-D animation is very impressive and further intensifies the whole viewing experience. The all-star voice cast also includes Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Stephen Colbert and Kiefer Sutherland.

“Monsters vs. Aliens” makes its way onto Blu-Ray with a top-notch presentation and a great set of extras. The animated movie is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format. Like many animated movies in high definition, “Monsters vs. Aliens” looks fantastic. The HD transfer would have been perfect if it wasn’t for the lack of a 3-D option. Its 5.1 Dolby TrueHD sound is also excellent. Special features include several behind-the-scenes featurettes (Modern Monster Movie Making & The Tech of Monsters vs. Aliens), an audio commentary track with the filmmakers, the enjoyable 13-minute “B.O.B.’s Big Break” 3-D animated short, three deleted scenes, paddle ball 3-D game, three sing-along segments with the film’s characters, and sneak peaks of other DreamWorks animated films. Overall, “Monsters vs. Aliens” scores a “B+”.

Very enjoyable movie, especially for older kids and adults. I expected to see the movie in 3D and was greatly disappointed to find that only to B.O.B. Extras in 3D. Particularly since all of the other Extras materials couldn’t stop gushing about HP & Intel. I have Spy Kids 3D on DVD and it was a very successful home view presentation.

I actually bought the Blu-ray version on the single disc, and in my opinion the packaging puts lots of emphasis on 3D glasses and no indication that they’re useless for the Feature Film, or that the Feature is in 2D only. I could not find it addressed anywhere on the packaging, at least in a font size I can read.

If you’re a techie like most of my family, wait for someone at Disney or Dreamworks to wise up and offer the 3D version. AND they better offer a decent discount for those of us that already bought the ho-hum version!

“The Dream Is Alive” is a beautifully-done, albeit fairly short (36 minutes), IMAX film.

Narrated expertly (as usual) by veteran newscaster Walter Cronkite, this program takes the viewer into space via NASA’s remarkable Space Shuttle Orbiters. We see the astronauts working, eating, and sleeping in the vacuum of space, as they orbit hundreds of miles above our Earth at a speed of 17,500 MPH.

We also see three breathtaking Shuttle launches (including one beautiful nighttime lift-off) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, all of which are photographed from different viewpoints and with crystal-clear clarity. These launches look magnificent on this DVD release!

This program was originally filmed in 1984. In addition to the copyright date on the packaging (which is actually 1985), we can tell the timeframe of this footage by the missions being photographed for the program — including STS-41-C (launched on April 6, 1984), which was a mission of historical significance, marking the first time a satellite had ever been repaired in space.

Another Shuttle mission we get a first-hand, in-space glimpse of is STS-41-D, which took to the skies on August 30, 1984.

Sadly, two of the astronauts we see performing their duties in this IMAX presentation (Francis Scobee and Judy Resnik) were lost in the Challenger disaster less than two years after the filming of this program.

The DVD gives us a good 5.1 Dolby Surround soundtrack; while the video is presented in Full Frame (1.33:1), which is the original aspect ratio of the film.

In addition to the splendid-looking (and sounding) launches, we also see some rather unique camera angles while the Shuttle is landing (one sequence filmed from — I think — one of the “chase” planes that always fly alongside the spacecraft as it’s landing). Great footage here!

There’s also time given to provide some gorgeous pictures of our blue and green planet as photographed by the Shuttle astronauts on their various missions. The “Pause” function on the ol’ DVD Player comes in handy when viewing these pretty Earthly images. You can “pause” them with perfect clarity too. Not a sign of blurriness to be found. Ah, the beauty of DVD. :)

The “pause” button is also great for freeze-framing the spectacular launch footage shown here as well. Just like a picture postcard it is. :)

Even with its brief running time, there’s still plenty here for space fanatics to sink their teeth into.

This is one space-related DVD to watch over and over again. A class act all the way.

This is the second or so IMAX film I remember seeing. I think I saw it in 1986, soon after the Challenger disaster, although the film is dated 1985 (Challenger was lost on 28 January 1986.) Remember when they used to show these movies in big inflatable bubble-buildings at the State Fair?

The beautiful scenes of Earth from space, narration by the immortal Walter Cronkite, inspirational music, and scenes with astronauts Resnick and Scobee, later lost with Challenger, make this everything that I think an IMAX movie should be – awe-inspiring, a little patriotic, and flat-out spectacular. This film always brings tears to my eyes and reminds me that the American spirit that made the space program possible can be used to accomplish remarkable things.

Technical note: I expected unbelievably fine image quality from a DVD of an IMAX movie but the master used to make this DVD was not completely pristine. About the same quality as a regular 35mm movie.

A view FROM THE TERRACE is what Paul Newman’s character David Alfred Eaton has of his future wife Mary (JoAnne Woodward). The screen play was based on a best-selling novel of the same name by John O’Hara. Given it was released in the 1950s when sex on the screen was verboten and not much more explicit in novels (ban a book in Boston), one must appreciate the work it took for Newman and Woodward to give these performances.

Like many other teenagers of my generation, I was “in love” with Paul Newman. Newman could make female hearts flutter by simply looking at the camera with his big blue eyes. Many other teens preferred Marlon Brando, his peer and rival for female affection. I believe these two actors were the Leonardo de Caprio and Brad Pitt of their day, although in the long run, Newman (like de Caprio) has had more staying power and gracefully made the transition to mature roles.

In the 1950s, to see a film one had to attend a theater, where the screen was usually covered with a huge velvet curtain. FTT played at the Center theater in my small town, and I saw the film six times after it was released. I was able to get into the theater for a quarter, and as my allowance was $3, this was no small sacrifice. So, you might say this film was one of my all time favorites.

Watching it again almost 50 years later, I wondered how I would react, and of course the passage of time and arrival of many other actors and vast changes in filmmaking have affected the way I view the film and Newman, but I still like him enormously, and this film holds it’s own, though the storyline may seem archaic.

This film is about infidelity and divorce and the price of success, a story line that may be lost on generations raised in an age of no-fault divorces and dual earner households. Once upon a time, divorce and infidelity were considered absolutely scandalous, and financially disastrous. In fact, if you divorced, your life was ruined. Many couples stayed together and suffered the ignominy of a cheating spouse. FTT was a ground-breaking film because it tackled these issues head-on.

The DVD version of the film is well done, and the price reasonable (technicolor and cinemascope production). Do your self a favorite, buy this DVD and add it to the shelf where you keep CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and other 50’s favorites.

Every few years, I sit back and enjoy “From the Terrace” for what it is. As good old fashioned “potboiler”, John O Hara’s screen adaptation is not quite as sprawling as say….Edna Ferber’s works, but nonetheless is a decent potboiler in its own right. Alfred (Paul Newman), discharged from the Navy after WW II is the ambitious, disaffected son of nouveau riche steel mill owner Samuel Eaton, (Leon Ames). Seeking to make his own unique mark in the world he spurns his father’s hopes of joining the business and decides his fortune is to be made elsewhere. Along the way, he meets his future blue-blooded trophy wife Mary St. John (Joanne Woodward) and soon discovers her appetites are far in excess even to his own ambitions. Landing a job at a prestigious Wall Street firm in an oblique way that is a potboiler’s trademark, Alfred comes under the watchful eye of old money and traditional expectations by J.D. MacHardie (masterfully portrayed by Felix Aylmer). I very much enjoyed all the scenes in which Aylmer’s MacHardie was highlighted and I can almost smell the stodginess of old money, ritual table manners, wood paneled walls, cigars, and brandy that were part of his ultra-conservative environment. Soon enough, while on a trip to scout business opportunities, Alfred meets Natalie (Ina Balin), the unattached daughter of a wealthy coal mine owner. Knowing full well of his marital status, she consents, even encourages his attention and unfaithfulness. Balin manages to pull this off with a naive sweetness without ever seeming cheap or trashy. Infidelity is a major theme in this work and I’m sure its frank discussion must have sparked many a controversy when this film was released very early in 1960. Veteran actress Myrna Loy was given near top billing as Alfred’s alcoholic and unfaithful mother, yet her on-screen performance was limited to the first reel of this nearly 2 1/2 hour film. I enjoyed the brief on screen appearance of young Barbara Eden as a flirtatious socialite. Patrick O’Neal was perfectly cast as the smarmy Dr. Jim Roper, the illicit lover of Mary St. John. Over his long acting career, Paul Newman has delivered solid performances again and again. This is one of his lesser known works but serves as a fine example of why he was so popular with the audience as a silver screen heartthrob. Watching this film today and being mindful of his lasting marriage to Joanne Woodward just serves to make this movie all the more compelling to me. I hope you will agree.

carpet cleaning 1

Carpets are the house owner’s prodigy, and to keep them cleaned is the necessity. Carpet Cleaning can be done by both the conventional as well new technological advanced methods Chemical manufacturers of carpet cleaning set the five main basic cleaning procedures after twenty years of their research, particularly dry-cleaning and Green based chemicals.

Commercially carpet cleaning is carried out through steam cleaning i.e. hot water extractionSecond procedure is dry cleaning which utilizes very low moisture and depends on the dry compounds supplemented by the application of cleansing solutions. This procedure is often very fast and labor intensive as compared to wet extraction systems. The next method Dry compound method needs biogradable powder and cleaning compound for cleansing carpets These compounds are spread all over the carpet and then swept or scrubbed over it.

For the not so big portions, a small household hand brush can be used to wipe out the filth and then it is vacuumed keeping carpet well cleaned and dry. The fourth method is Bonnet method involving club soda and cleansing product; both are combined with each other and scattered over the carpet and machine known as round buffer or bonnet is rotated over the mixture. This method involves more time in drying and is not advised for deep cleansing.
Shampoos are also being widely utilized for carpet cleaning.

This process was most popular till 1970 but it soon lost its position when Encapsulation system of carpet cleaning appeared. The process of Encapsulation is new technology for carpet cleaning that involves crystallizing soil particles into dry residues. It’s deep cleaning compound crystals soaks the filth before removing it from the carpet. For this procedure, rotary machines, bush applicator or compression sprayer are utilized for applying solution and then vacuum cleaner is used to clear dry residue. This system increases the beauty of the carpet better.

There are number of home made procedures for Carpet Cleaning too like vacuuming, stain removing, making use of brushes, brooms etc to give your carpets a neat, clean and long life.

The Combat Classics 50 Movie Pack consists of war films primarily region during World War II that have fallen into public domain. As fans of the Mill Creek Entertainment products have reach to seek information from, the quality of the transfers in this boxed station range from gorgeous to beneficial, but the entertainment value of these movies is better than usual. There are no documentaries included in this space and only a handful of foreign films shot using a figurehead American star TV movies are incorporated. I’d have given fleshy marks, except for one notable caveat – 25 of the 50 films listed can be found in other Mill Creek 50 Movie Packs: 17 were included in “War Classics”, 5 in “Action Classics”, 2 in Historical Classics and 1 each from “All-Time Classics” and “Hollywood Legends”. In fact, the mediocre `Yellowneck’ has been now been included in three different 50 Movie Pack collections. Since the recently released “TV Favorites” 150 episode pack includes 100 episodes previously included in other sets, this is a disturbing trend.

As an avid WWII movie buff, I found most of this collection features older movies (30 from 1940 – 1959) with another 10 from the 60’s and half a dozen from the 70’s. There were even two from 1934 and 1936. Most of them are worthwhile with a few ‘duds’ thrown in to accomplish the magical number of 50. For instance, I don’t judge many of us would request Mexico and Pauncho Villa to be included in a ‘Combat Classic’ Collection. Realizing the cost and hours of entertainment to be realized, it was appetizing for the most piece. Don’t question all of them to be top knotch movies but if you like older movies then you’ll salvage this collection worthwhile.

Filled with compelling likeable characters, you eye their transformations as the hockey season progresses. You really originate to connect with their frustrations, joy and perserverence as they try to crash out of the most violent league in hockey for a chance to enter the majors.

I really didn’t know what to inquire of on this one. It’s nice suprise that they showed hockey life slack the scenes. The community living was comical and the guys were resplendent laid help thou unexcited wanted to play hard and fetch contracts for higher level teams/leagues.

I judge this is a nice documentary about a team in the toughest league in the world.

THE Grisly SUN DEMON is a few steps above most drive-in terror features of its genre. Well, maybe objective one step. Shot on a minimal budget, director and star Robert Clarke creates some brilliantly directed moments. There is also a stunning eerie atmospehre, even though its quite definite many of the nighttime sequences were shot during the day! The loyal Sun Demon’s raison d’etre is rather clumsily explained (the actors “assure” the memoir of how Clarke became the sun demon than actually showing it, another budget constraint) . Many of the cheap elements of awful movies are here: cheap costumes, particularly terrible actresses that view like substantial names (check out the Marilyn Monroe lounge singer and the Vivien Leigh spy alike girlfriend!), minimal sets and local actors. There is a lot to recommend about this movie and it won’t disappoint most B-movie fans. As for the true DVD itself…The film print source at times suffers from somre wear and scuttle. In some areas, the describe is pelted with scratched both vertical and horizontal. Other than that, the movie has some nice contrasts and the soundtrack is particularly impressive. It has a wonderfully designed menu and a scratchy preview. All in all, worth every penny!

Well, now, from the veil of this one, you’d deem that this was lower down on the evolutionary scale than plankton. Actually, it falls somewhere between the whole-heartedly “serious” sci-fi flicks of the 50s (like “Them!” and “The Day the Earth Stood Tranquil”) and the **real** bottom-of-the-barrel stuff like “The Fantastic Tall Man” and “Beast From the Afraid Cave”. Correct, lawful, you do have to have a taste for cheese to really indulge in these things, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Our hero is quite the booze-hound, but that didn’t retain his friend from recommending him for his modern job (somewhat unclear – apparently it involves unloading isotope bars off of a toy railroad…! ) One day, he shows up to work with a hangover (his dependable assistant insists it was “impartial a headache”!), and the next thing he knows – he’s been exposed to “5 or 6 minutes” of radiation. That’s enough – remember, this was made aid in the days when anyone marvelous of using the words “isotope” and “radiation” in the same sentence was definitely some kind of Poindexter. The spellbinding thing about this film (besides the rubber-suited lizard man) is that it doesn’t seem to matter to anyone that, hey!, we have this guy who turns into a Unsightly Sun Demon, and they don’t retain him around for observation. “Impartial quit out of the sun.” Okie-dokie! Kindly news is that he’s serene very grand the booze-hound, and therefore we acquire to use time following him around, looking for bars at night – looks downright noirish for a while, and by all means stick around for the stacked blonde singing the “Adore Song From Plain Sun Demon”, aka “Curious Pursuit” (what a title! What a song! What kind of piano is that woman playing, anyway? ) Still, our director and star did his best with this one – some of the scenes are really well mild (there’s one scene advance the beginning that looks as though Ansel Adams could have shot it) and it has a far more polished feel to it than SO many of these movies. (Ugh – if you haven’t sat through a Francis Coleman movie, you have no accurate to pass judgement on THIS one!) The DVD transfer is completely acceptable (what, you’re waiting for the widescreen edition? I don’t mediate so….) even if it doesn’t really have any extras (other than the liner notes, which set aside the whole thing into perspective) . There’s some film scratchiness but mostly it’s fair decent B&W – not too washed out, not too contrasty. It even has the usually-deleted “rat scene” (you’ll know what I’m referring to as soon as you peek it) .Buy,Download, Or Stream The Hideous Sun Demon! A prime prick of the genre, best enjoyed with a rainy Saturday afternoon or a couple of friends for riffing purposes. Have fun!
